The SKYDEG range of OXO-DEGRADABLE films have been designed to compliment SKYMARKS Environmentally Sustainable Packaging policy. As a conscientious packaging film supplier we actively promote the ethos of
REDUCE • REUSE • RECYCLE
however, as not all local authorities have facilities allowing general purpose PE waste to be recycled, SKYMARK believe its SKYDEG range of films has a part to play in minimising the effects of plastic waste on the environment.
SKYDEG films contain specialist additives that cause the base polymer chain to break down (chain scission) to a size allowing micro-organism attack. This is achieved by the prodegradative effect of certain transition metal ions on the polymer used (Food Approved). The reaction is free radical initiated, through the reaction of light and heat, and results in the oxidation of the polymer chains, breaking them down into smaller and smaller polymeric units which results in embrittlement and degradation of the polymer. Once the particle size is small enough then microbial attack is possible (see How Does it Work?)
The SKYDEG range of films will degrade to carbon dioxide, water and biomass after approximately 4 years in the domestic waste stream; compared to conventional plastics which can take well over 100 years. The rate of degradation is subject to temperature, film thickness, available surface area and the viability of the waste site. However it should be noted that although SKYDEG films will fully degrade they can still be RECYLCED.
Through innovation, design and the use of advanced manufacturing technology we are able to formulate specific grades of SKYDEG films to ensure the standard and quality of the films are not compromised allowing them to meet or surpass the requirements of our customers’.
